Best Buy Convection Toaster Oven

Since 2016, Michael Sullivan has spent hundreds of hours researching and testing toaster ovens for this guide. As a senior staff writer at Wirecutter, he has researched, tested, and reviewed toasters, air fryer toaster ovens, pod-shaped air fryers, and deep fryers, among other kitchen gear and gadgets. This guide builds on work by freelance writer Brendan Nystedt.

Ease of operation: A good toaster oven should be intuitive to use, with clearly labeled controls and an easy-to-read display. The most basic features should include adjustable temperature controls (ideally between 150 F and 450 F) and adjustable toast-shade settings.

In every round of testing we conducted for this guide, we started by filling each toaster with as many slices of basic white bread as we could, then set each machine to toast at medium shade. The results gave us a heat map of each oven, showing us how evenly each model toasted and whether there were any hot spots.

We recommend the Panasonic FlashXpress Toaster Oven for those who want a small oven to make toast, prepare a few frozen snacks, or reheat a couple slices of pizza. We are smitten with its adorable retro 90s design, and after years of long-term testing we continue to be impressed with its strong baking performance, compact size, and reasonable price. The FlashXpress cooked foods to a lovely, even golden brown better than most other models we tried in this price range (and beyond), and its toast shade settings were among the most accurate. For a relatively low price, this toaster oven stands out from a crowded pack of mediocre, cheap models. We found its performance and features to be comparable to those of larger and pricier toaster ovens.

Without a doubt, the Cuisinart distributed heat evenly across its voluminous cavity, toasting nine slices of bread in a single batch to near golden-brown perfection. Corner to corner, no other oven was as consistent (aside from the exorbitantly priced Wolf Gourmet Countertop Oven). Similarly priced large toaster ovens (like ones from Breville and KitchenAid) concentrated heat in the center of the oven and had more significant fall-off of heat toward the edges.

This model comes with the most basic accessories, including an oven rack, a baking pan, and a crumb tray. More-advanced digital models will alert you once the oven is preheated to a set temperature, but the Hamilton Beach lacks this feature. The instruction manual recommends allowing 5 minutes for the toaster oven to preheat. Even so, a charming, old-school ding does alert you when the timer goes off. We preferred this subtle sound to the ear-shattering beeps on some digital models, like the Wolf Gourmet Countertop Oven.

One disappointing thing about the Breville, especially at this price, is that it comes with a two-year warranty, whereas the Cuisinart has a three-year warranty. To learn even more about the Breville Air Fryer Pro, see our guide to the best air fryer toaster ovens.

If you have your eye on a recipe written specifically for a pod-shaped air fryer (as most are) but want to prepare it in a convection toaster oven, you can get good results with some minor adjustments.

The best countertop ovens are energy-efficient workhorses in the kitchen, replacing a slew of smaller appliances like air fryers, toasters, slow cookers and more. Even better, they do the same job as full-sized ovens, allowing you to cook an entire turkey without overheating your apartment or home. And unlike bulky options of yore, the latest countertop ovens are sleek and compact, designed to take up very little space on your countertop. Our favorite model overall is Breville The Smart Oven Pro, a stylish and easy to use option that features 10 cooking settings for added convenience.

Air "fryers" are a con. They are by name a fryer, but in function, no such thing at all. In truth, they are nothing but dumbed-down convection ovens made with cheap plastic. They offer less cooking surface area and fewer functions for a similar footprint on your countertop and end up being just one more clunky appliance neither you nor your kitchen ever needed.

With the addition of a wire tray and a metal sheet pan, any decent convection toaster oven will achieve what an air "fryer" can and more. It can bake, roast, and broil, and it can even toast! Oh, the novelty! Further, thanks to the internal fan that prevents hot and cold spots, a convection toaster oven arguably works better than the regular oven.

Consider how many batches it would take to cook for even just two, let alone four, in an air fryer. And while the footprint might be a little smaller, it won't fit as neatly into a corner or beneath a cabinet in the way that a boxier, prettier, and usually stainless-steel convection toaster oven would.

Below are convection toasters recommended by our expert home appliance tester and reviewer, James Brains, who is in full agreement that they will serve you far, far better. If you're still air fryer curious even after all this, I also recommend checking out a multicooker like this one by Instant Pot, which has an air frying feature but can also pressure cook and slow cook.

We tested different models at a range of price points and found a clear winner (although we admit it is more oven than toaster), but there were a number of models that performed well as both countertop convection ovens or more traditional toaster ovens, some at a fraction of the price.

We made chocolate chip cookies from scratch, portioned them out and froze them overnight. Then we baked four to a rack the next day. For both the pizza and cookie tests, we used the baking sheets that came with the respective toaster ovens.

Besides being a remarkably accurate and even-cooking toaster oven with the capacity to hold nine slices of bread or a 13-inch pizza, the Ninja Foodi air fries and does it about as well and as fast as any model we've tested. Even better, the entire toaster flips upright on a back hinge when not in use giving you more counter space. When upright, it's about 8 inches from front to back. Pretty cool, right

With this toaster oven, you get toast at distinct light, medium, and dark shades when toasting bread. Each slice is fairly evenly toasted but not perfectly so. The rack is huge so you can toast nine slices of bread at once if you are so inclined.

WHY WE LIKE IT: The best mini oven on the market with a slew of advanced features, including a see-through glass door for visibility, a baking rack, and a high-efficiency infrared heating element that eliminates the need for preheating.

The Panasonic FlashXpress is the best small toaster oven on the market, thanks to a powerful ceramic and quartz infrared heating element, which eliminates the need to preheat before use. We loved the one-touch temperature controls here, allowing for precise customization, and the see-through glass door, offering good visibility as you cook. This toaster oven also boasts an integrated and fully removable baking rack.

WHY WE LIKE IT: Fantastic compact-sized toaster oven that features durable stainless steel construction, a pleasing retro aesthetic, and an integrated baking rack with two viable rack positions.

The Hamilton Beach Easy Reach Small Toaster Oven is a great option for those looking to match style with substances, as this aesthetically pleasing model boasts some serious features while looking great on nearly any kitchen countertop. We loved the durable stainless steel construction and the integrated baking rack, which comes with two rack positions for a variety of cooking styles. We also enjoyed that this toaster oven is compact, yet offers enough room to toast four slices of bread at once or cook a 9-inch pizza.

Though the size and maximum capacity were pleasing here, this is a pretty heavy toaster oven, coming in at well over eight pounds. Also, the rotary-based temperature control dials do not have as much precise control as some models. If you need something more precise, especially for roasting chicken, check out the best rotisserie toaster oven.

This Breville mini smart oven is an exceptional choice for nearly any consumer, thanks to a high-quality feature set that includes a durable and sturdy stainless steel construction. We also loved the generous internal capacity, which is enough for six slices of bread or even a 13-inch pizza. We were also impressed by the convection-based heating element, which works quickly and significantly cuts down on the preheat time.

The Cuisinart TOB-40N Custom Small Toaster Oven is a great option for consumers who want something easy-to-use right out of the box, as this model ships with rubberized easy-grip dials, a cool-touch handle, and a front removable tray. We also appreciated the non-stick coating throughout the interior, for easy cleaning, and the powerful 1800 watt heating element. This toaster oven also boasts a generous maximum capacity, allowing six pieces of bread to rest simultaneously.

This Breville toaster oven is a fantastic choice for those who hate to clean their kitchen appliances, as this model ships with a non-stick coating running throughout the interior, making for a simple cleaning process. We loved the backlit LCD, which makes for easy programming, and the eight distinct cooking functions, for bagels, pizza, toast, and more. We also liked the fast 1800 watt preheating function, which allows you to start cooking quickly.

This is an expensive toaster oven, however, likely due to the well-regarded brand name and high-grade components on offer. Additionally, the weight here is higher-than-average, at over 13 pounds, so moving it around may be a slight hassle. You can also check out our best convection microwave ovens buying guide for more options.

Though light and compact, this toaster is only available in two-tone black and silver, so it may not suit all aesthetic preferences. Additionally, the 1100-watt heating element is not the most powerful on the market, so take that into consideration before making a purchase. The best small microwave is another good option. 59ce067264
